{Milk Bar Monday} Compost Cookies

IMG_68761

It’s my favorite day again- Milk Bar Monday! Today the girls and I have a pretty amazing treat to share. In fact- this cookie may be the reason I wanted the Milk Bar Cookbook to begin with The name says it all: Compost Cookie, an outlet to “dump” all the random ingredients you have sitting in your pantry. Many people call these cookies “Dumpster Cookies” or “Kitchen Sink Cookies” but I think Compost suits if perfectly. (In fact- the picture below I snapped via Instagram of a bunch of ingredients thrown in kinda resembles a Compost scraps pile don’t you think?)

Christina Tosi mentions in the book that this recipe allows you to take lots of liberties and throw in whatever you have, but for the purposes of this challenge I decided to stick with what they use at Milk Bar : (chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, oatmeal, coffee grounds, graham cracker crumb, potato chips and pretzels.)  Looking for other mix-in ideas? I think M&Ms, nuts, toffee, peanut butter chips and cereal could all be amazing. I’m excited to try my own version of these cookies someday soon!

Also- I was lucky enough to try an authentic compost cookie last week when I visited a Milk Bar location, and I wanted to see if they tasted the same. The verdict- the strongest flavors both times were the butterscotch and the coffee. However, my cookies were much crispier on the edges than the one I had last week. That could be my hot-as-can-be- oven, who knows. Both were delicious!

The lovely Krissy chose this week’s recipe, so head over to her site to get the recipe. Please also say hello to my other Milk Bar Monday cohorts:

Jacqueline from The Dusty Baker
Nicole from Sweet Peony Blog

PS- A (minor) emergency has required me to leave NYC/my kitchen for a few days or so. I’m not sure if I’ll have more recipes for you this week, but I’ll try to keep you posted with an “Instagram Update” either way. (Don’t worry- everything will be OK.)

  1. I saw the photo of junk food posted on the facebook page and so hoped this was forthcoming. Happy Day! Salty sweet cookie heaven!

  2. I think it’s awesome that you get to compare the two different cookies (homemade and one from the bakery) to see if they taste differently. I mean if everyone just bought a copy of their book then no one would go to their bakery and buy their goodies. Ok that’s probably a lie…but it makes sense right?

Anyways. These look fantastic! I love your Milk Bar Mondays posts :)

  3. I LOVE the name! What a great idea too….will give these a try soon! My kids will love them!

  4. These look divine. I just want to reach in the screen and grab a few.

Hope everything is okay. Sending good vibes your way.

  5. I made these cookies a long time ago when I first found the recipe online. It had Ritz Crackers in it, I think. Anyway, I found them to be wonderful cookies. I would make them again.

I still have not gotten to the Milk Bar. I am hoping to make it there next time we go to NYC. I want a slice of the real Crack Pie and a Compost Cookie, all my own.

    Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  6. Such a cool series you have going on here. I am a pastry cook at Milk Bar and it’s exciting to see people love making the treats we make!

  7. Summer thanks so much for stopping by! We are having so much fun with this project- the Milk Bar treats are amazing!
